Be Nice To Cartoonists Week (2002-03-25 12:19:46) [link]
With POKEY FUN 2 posted, now seems like a good time to start:

BE NICE TO CARTOONISTS WEEK

As a person who makes a web comic, I notice that the mail I get about the comic tends to be divided about 10 to 1. That is, one nice fan mail for every 10 complaints about not updating frequently enough, or some strip that someone didn't like, or why I haven't linked to someone's website.

I don't believe people mean to send nothing but negative feedback, but it sure feels that way, since no one feels the need to write when things are going the way they like. They only write when they have something to complain about.

Therefore, I would like to start BE NICE TO CARTOONISTS WEEK. This week, go to the site for the comics you like, and look for that email link, and send a nice email letting the author know how much you like their comic. That's it. Just a nice email with no critisisms. You'd be amazed at the effect a nice fan mail has on a cartoonist's motivation, especially less popular comics that don't get much feedback.

If you feel like spreading the word, please cut and paste these paragraphs onto your website, or just write up your own.
Introductions (2002-03-20 11:50:11) [link]
Last night, while walking through downtown Portland with Zach, we ran into two people he sort of knew. They introduced themselves by saying what name they posted to LiveJournal as.

1) It took some restraint to not start telling them how much happier they would be with a KillingMachines journal. ;)

2) I'm having trouble adapting to the fact that while web sites, by and large, are still something geeky that not everyone has, weblogs are as common as email addresses or cell phones. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great change. People shouldn't be intimidated by technology, and the wide-spread acceptance of weblogs as something fun makes me very happy. But I don't think I ever dreamed I'd be able to introduce myself someday as "I'm Scott from KillingMachines."

I'm An Elf (2002-02-22 17:28:43) [link]
I Am A: Neutral Good Elf Bard Ranger

Alignment:
Neutral Good characters believe in the power of good above all else. They will work to make the world a better place, and will do whatever is necessary to bring that about, whether it goes for or against whatever is considered 'normal'.

Race:
Elves are the eldest of all races, although they are generally a bit smaller than humans. They are generally well-cultured, artistic, easy-going, and because of their long lives, unconcerned with day-to-day activities that other races frequently conccern themselves with. Elves are, effectively, immortal, although they can be killed. After a thousand years or so, they simply pass on to the next plane of existance.

Primary Class:
Bards are the entertainers. They sing, dance, and play instruments to make other people happy, and, frequently, make money. They also tend to dabble in magic a bit.

Secondary Class:
Rangers are the defenders of nature and the elements. They are in tune with the Earth, and work to keep it safe and healthy.

Fight Club (2002-02-14 19:54:27) [link]
Sometimes Killing Machines reminds me of Fight Club. When my journal scrolls off the front page, but I continue reading and replying in other people's journals, It reminds me of this quote from Fight Club: (I'm quoting from the book, which is phrased a little differently than the movie, but you should get the point)
"The new rule is that nobody should be the center of fight club, he says. Nobody's the center of fight club except the two men fighting. The leader's voice will yell, walking slowly around the crowd, out in the darkness. The men in the crowd will stare at other men across the empty center of the room."

When my journal scrolls off the front page, I feel like the leader, walking slowly around the crowd, leaving comments now and then, but leaving the focus on others.

Is it true, everybody asks. Is Scott Vandehey building an army? That's the word. Does Scott Vandehey only sleep one hour a night? Rumor has it that Scott's on the road starting Killing Machines all over the country. What's next, everybody wants to know...
